Providenciales Turks and Caicos Islands Review

I have been getting a lot of search requests about if your GPS works in the Turks. I took mine and it would not work. I use a TomTom, sorry.

Providenciales (known as Provo) is the hub for tourism of the Turks and Caicos Islands. The island’s crowning glory is Grace Bay, a 12 mile stretch of velvety sand. Also on Provo, bird watchers enjoy acres of inland lakes frequented by white herons and pink flamingos. Just a dozen miles from Provo is North Caicos, which receives the most rainfall, making it notably greener with tall trees and lush vegetation. The southern part of North Caicos is swampy, with broad estuaries that are home to a vast colony of West Indian flamingos. North Caicos is popular with vacation-home buyers, especially around Whitby, with its stunning seven-mile beach.

We took a couple drives around the island off the main roads. You will find a lot of nice houses out of the way overlooking the blue water. You can see reefs from about any vantage point. You can find a beach anywhere you go with soft white sand and not a lot of people. Watching the sunset was outstanding while in the water with a floating cooler of rum runners. If you are into shells you will have no trouble finding large white ones on the side beaches. I did not get a chance to go fishing but hear it is great around all the reefs.

You will run into people from all over the globe. Besides the local American we were working with we were the only people from the U.S. We met many of nice people from all over and learned a lot about other cultures.

That is about where the pros end. The island has a large crime problem, the local government was shut down and booted by Britain because of massive corruption. The first night on the beach with a local (American), two ladies didn’t think we were watching and started to go through our stuff. We ran them off and they went down the beach looking for other tourist. The next night we went to a place called Danny Boys that looked like a nice place right in the middle of the islands tourist trap. We soon found out that every lowlife must have been their. The prostitutes were all over trying to make moves and a lot of thugs. I asked the local American we were with if this was the only night life, he said no but the best. I don’t need to say we had one drink and went back to the hotel.

The next night me and a co-worker went to the beach to have a couple rum runners and after the sun hit the edge of the earth the freaks came out. Had two guys trying to set us up and that is when we finished the night at the hotel pool.

Another thing I must say is that most locals are very rude and untrusting on the island away from the resorts and tourist shops in the main area. Went into a cigar/gift store and was followed around like I was stealing. Walked into the walk-in humidor and the guy about had a heart attack. That is just one story. It is hard to get a thank you, hi or just common courtesies from about anyone. They always make you feel like they have to go out of their way for you. Don’t get me wrong, in the “tourist trap” people are nice because they want you to buy. Some of the shops are owned by outsiders from all over.

Most that go to this island stay in a resort, I did not and maybe I just seen the outside world their. I spoke to people on my flight out that said they had a great time but never left the resort they were at. I’m sure that is a different world.

Overall, staying at a resort and taking tours would probably be a good time but knowing how the locals are I will never go back. Beautiful scenery can not fix the crime and rudeness issues they have.
